The 570-million-euro investment will power 290,000 homes
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Belgian company Parkwind are teaming up to build a massive 570 million euro offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany. The location is near the island of Rügen and the construction of Windpark Arcadis Ost 1 will begin in 2022, while the project is set to finish the next year.
In the end, it will generate enough power for the equivalent of 290,000 households.
Parkwind is a Belgian firm and its previous projects were exclusively set in that country, so this is their first international endeavour after they won the project back in 2018.
They obtained the construction permit from the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in March 2021. And they will be bringing new technology to the table, as a result.
Typically, jack-up vessels with legs stationed on the seabed are used to install offshore wind turbines. The floating (swimming) method will avoid contact with the seabed and any potential problems with stability, thus decreasing construction time and risk.
The European Investment Bank Institutes KBC, Belfius, Helaba, KfW, IPEX-Bank, Rabobank, Société Général, ING and EKF have collected 570 Million Euro to build the Arcadis Ost 1 wind farm with the EIB providing 150 million euros.
EU Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni praised the move in a press release for the EIB, stating that the EU needed to massively expand its renewable energy sources if it were to reach climate neutrality by 2050.
The Energy Minister of the German federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Christian Pegel pointed out that these projects bring massive economic development for the region, as Arcadis Ost 1 will be the fourth offshore wind farm there.
