Gothenburg municipality in Sweden is a true example for a Smart region. In the Biskopsgarden district of the city you can find “One Stop Future Shop” - a programme that has been empowering people on the peripheries of the labour market, such as immigrants, to kickstart their own entrepreneurial projects.
Refugees are vulnerable in a foreign market. They have very little knowledge about the Swedish labour market and they need support from the system. For example, for an immigrant coming to the country, it takes around 9 years to enter the job market. Without the help of their respecitve municipality, they are bound to remain without prospects for a while. The unique project helps these people, seeing them not as jobless but as potential entrepreneurs. Helping them is a social act that improves Swedish society as a whole. The multicultural approach of the project is a key aspect, it offers business advice in 6 languages (Arabic, English, Persian, Somali, Spanish and Swedish), with a focus on sustainability and social entrepreneurship. From the beginning in 2016, the program, which is supported by the EU`s Cohesion Fund has created around 140 new businesses. The project is so successful that the institutions of Gothenburg have decided to extend their support for it beyond the initially planned three year period.
