The underground rapid transit lines have been under construction for almost two decades due to various project delays
Criticised and adored by many, the world-renowned monument was inaugurated precisely thirteen decades ago
We can hardly imagine a more recognisable tourist attraction than the Eiffel tower. Located in the heart of Paris, it has become a symbol of the French capital over the course of the last 13 decades. On this day, the world-renowned monument celebrates the 130th anniversary of its inauguration.
Opened to the public over 100 years ago on 15th May 1889, the Eiffel Tower was conceived as the entrance and the main attraction of the Universal Exhibition of Paris. Designed as an exhibition item by Gustave Eiffel after whom it was named, fiercely criticised by many for its contrasting style, the iron tower can not only be seen on most Paris souvenirs and tourist pictures but remains the most-visited paid monument worldwide. What is more, the 324-metres tall building has been the tallest human-made structure on the globe for four decades.
Hence, on the occasion of its anniversary, the Tower is hosting a special show with the participation of 1,300 Parisian children, music, light spectacle and an unforgettable festive mood. The evening programme starts at 20h30 with a free Jeanne Added concert on the Esplanade, followed by an unprecedented light show by scenographer Bruno Seillier, tracing the history of the 81-stories building, which is going to be rerun between 22h00 and 1h00, as well as over the course of the next two days.
