Ireland celebrates youthful culture and creativity

Cruinniú na nÓg will be taking place online amid Covid-19 precautions

With a range of challenging and engaging events and workshops, Ireland will mark tomorrow, 13 June, Cruinniú na nÓg – the national day of youthful creativity. Cruinniú na nÓg is an initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme at the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, carried out in partnership with public broadcaster RTÉ and the Local Authorities.

Creativity unleashed at home

Over the past 2 years the initiative has encouraged children and young people to do something creative, develop a flair for discovery and acquire new skills. The 2020 events will come with a difference - due to the current Covid-19 restrictions they will take place online.

There won’t be a shortage of events, though, and all of them will be free of charge, child-centred and activity-based. Organizers have issued “calls to action” which children, young people and entire families can answer by getting creative in their own homes and gardens.

Highlights include Céilí in the Kitchen -  the traditional Irish social gathering; Let’s Go Fly a Kite - make and fly a kite in your county colours; Become a Story Keeper – pen a story about a  lighthouse if you are an aspiring writer aged 7-12; Create a Video Game App of your own choice.

Online supports and resources are provided by the Creative Ireland Programme and its partners: Áirc Damhsa, The Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, Great Lighthouses of Ireland, Fighting Words, Whizz Kids Training and RTÉ. Local Authorities will also be joining in with a range of cultural and creative activities and virtual events.

From storytelling to cream making

Speaking ahead of Cruinniú na nÓg, the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eoghan O'Brien, told the Fingal County website: “I am delighted to announce this years programme of events in Fingal County which includes over 25 free online workshops in coding, photography, photogram, storytelling, dance, singing, visual arts, yoga and even ice cream making. The importance of harnessing creativity in our young people cannot be underestimated particularly in the current climate and we are proud to present a programme of events which allows the voice of our young people to be heard and nourishes their wellbeing through participation in creative activities”.

The full programme of events and other useful info can be found on the Cruinniú na nÓg page.
