Is one Dutch city on the way to discarding asphalt as road-building material?

One company is surely working on that

VolkerWessels, a Dutch construction company, has come up with an innovative plan to stop using asphalt for road-building. The idea is to fully construct roads from recycled plastic. Plastic waste, polluting waters, will be collected, recycled and used for roads.

The company already has been given a particular location to test the concept and the first roads to be built will actually be bicycle lanes. Separate segments will be put together and when they wear out they will be replaced with new ones.

Rotterdam City Council has embraced the innitiative and if it provides satisfactory results, authorities are looking forward to implementing the new method elsewhere.
