Event organizers are invited to take a look at it and develop their own set of rules
Abhainn Ri Festival, Kilkenny Cat Laughs Comedy Festival, Savour Kilkenny, Ireland’s Town of Books Festival, Kilkenny Roots Festival, Kilkenny Arts Festival…
Small wonder that Kilkenny is promoting itself as the Irish county of festivals. So, it should come as no surprise that local authorities try to bring these touristy, but not quite eco-friendly events in line with current nature preservation requirements.
To this end, Kilkenny County Council has formulated a Green Charter for Festivals and Community Events. The charter is non-binding and customizable, so organizers of this year’s events are invited to take a look at it and develop their own set of rules. Small steps can yield impressive results, but planning is key, say the Charter creators.
The Green Charter for Festivals and Community Events consists of 10 points. Among them are calls to minimise waste and reduce water and energy consumption; operate a three-bin system; replace single use plastics with reusable or compostable plates, cups and cutlery; use non-hazardous cleaning products; buy local and seasonal products; ban the release of balloons and Chinese lanterns.
The Charter creators advise people to refer for help and more information to Green Your Festival, an initiative of the Local Authority Prevention Network.
Savour Kilkenny food festival has been in the forefront of the efforts to ‘go green’. Announcing the festivals 2020 edition (22-26 October), organizers said that 100 food vendors/stall holders have signed up to the ‘Green Charter’.
For the festival, stalls will be using certified compostable, environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible packaging; vendors will avoid displaying single portions of condiments, will use compostable containers and non-hazardous and eco-friendly cleaning products. Local produce and fair-trade will be prioritized and organic, compostable material should be separated from unsuitable waste materials.
