The ban will include several famous districts
Amsterdam authorities are thinking about putting a ban on renting apartments in the center of the city. The ban will be effective in several districts among which is the famous Red Light district. Owners of apartments will not be allowed to use the Airbnb platform to advertise and rent their places. The reason for this are the constantily increasing prices of apartments for sale due to the heavy flow of tourists looking to rent short-term.
The new regulation will also include the decreasing of the number of available nights for short-term rents to 30 nights per year, as opposed to 60 nights that are allowed now. Owners might also be required to obtain a license in order to be able to rent out their property. Should they fail to obtain one, fines will be quite severe.
Many European cities that are major tourist destinations, such as Paris, for example, support the idea of restricting short-term rents as many locals complain of the ever more increasing prices for regular, long-term rents.
