A meeting of the Mayors of twenty-seven statutory cities of the Czech Republic in Pardubice culminated in the signing of a joint position defining the basic requirements for the new programming period of the European Union (2021–2027). The most important points are the expansion of the Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) to thirteen territories, earmarking 75 to 100 billion for its implementation and breaking the distrust in the ITI by some ministries.
The joint document, signed by the mayors of big cities, is addressed to the managing authorities of future operational programs, i.e. the Ministry for Regional Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.
Despite that the programming period starts in 2021, statutory cities already participate actively in cohesion policy preparations. The aim is to negotiate the best possible conditions and to provide them with enough funds from the European Union for development. As the current period is still running, it is necessary to start preparations well in advance so that the use of European subsidies is as quick and efficient as possible.
However, the largest cities in the Czech Republic do not only target European resources. Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura called for all ministries to negotiate on the allocation of national resources for the implementation of their strategies.
At the same time, the Statutory Cities highlighted the positive role of the Ministry for Regional Development, the body responsible for regional policy, which recognizes the importance of supporting cities for the economic development of the Czech Republic. The discussion with cities and municipalities is considered very important for the proper setting of public investment and the government's policy statement already provides good basis for the promotion of urban agenda.
