The new green scheme will invest 40 million euros in cycling and walking
Finland aims to increase walking and cycling by 30% by the year 2030. The goal is to ensure that Finnish residents complete a total of roughly 450 million new journeys on foot or two wheels and is part of the government’s climate and energy strategy laid down in 2016. The country plans to spend 41 million euros between 2020 and 2022 for the planning work and project promotion related to walking and cycling. Ten million euros of that amount will be devoted to developing infrastructure to support more walking and cycling.
Part of the government’s green scheme appropriations will be directed towards municipalities to assist with the construction of infrastructure such as bike lanes. Financial support will also be used to establish quality standards for them and to encourage the introduction of company bikes. Some Finnish municipalities have already taken the lead in encouraging residents to opt for more low-emissions modes of transportation. For example, the local governments in Joensuu and Oulu have long invested in cycling. Even during the winter, inhabitants of Oulu and Joensuu cycle more than people in southern Finland do during summertime.
