The robot can observe and learn from human behavior
Recent technological progress permits robots to actively and safely share a common workspace with humans. Europe is currently the leader of the robotic market for safety-certified robots, by enabling robots to react to unintentional contacts. The predictions are that in the future robots will interact with us more and more in daily life. The European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme is funding Italian scientists, who are developing humanoid robots that can observe and learn from human behavior.
The name of the test robot is iCub. The vision that the Italian scientists have of the final application of this type of robot is the personal assistant, which will be adapted in different ways, from the rehabilitation robot, to the one for assisted living. The size and range of movements of each robot will adapt to its particular function. Another feature under development is iCub’s ability to record additional information – such as recognizing a new object – through vocal instruction, without the direct intervention of a programmer.
