The French Riviera city has 2 such beaches - open 7 days a week and free to access
The beach season for persons with physical disabilities in Nice officially opens this weekend. As the city reported, from Saturday 4 June, it will be possible for persons with a handicap to have a bath at Carras, while the beach at Centenaire will open a month later, on 1 July.
As part of its policy in favour of people with disabilities, the City of Nice organizes two labeled Handiplages each year during the summer: one on the Centenary site and another on the Carras site. Both beaches dispose of the handicap beach label, certifying their accessibility to persons with a disability. The label is given by the Handiplage Association.
The Handiplages are open 7 days a week, public holidays included, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are free to use and supervised by 15 certified guards. It is not necessary to present a certificate of disability or a reservation notice – just to go there and relax.
It follows then that anyone with specific needs can be welcomed and accompanied for a safe swim (people with disabilities but also the elderly who may have difficulty moving; the same goes for people with reduced mobility or with balance disorders).
A slab, materialized by a marking (blue outline and armchair) is installed on each of the two beaches, connected to the southern sidewalk of the Promenade des Anglais by an access ramp and an accessible path.
Each site is equipped with a shade system. Life jackets are available to swimmers. A mat is positioned between the slab and the water to facilitate movement which is usually made difficult by the pebbles. Each site also has amphibious wheelchairs allowing access to the water.
In addition, the handiplages have the advantage of being located in the immediate vicinity of first aid stations. Carras has toilets adapted for people with reduced mobility, as well as a cloakroom with a grab bar for changing in complete privacy. On Centenaire beach, the site’s public toilets also allow one to change clothes in privacy.
