The European Commission announced the signature of a number of agreements for the improvement or creation of infrastructure as part of the Aid Programme to the Turkish Cypriot community. The go-ahead has been given for the construction of a five-kilometre linear park along the Pedieos River aiming to bring the two communities together through recreational activities.
As part of the aid programme, the EC also signed a number of contracts and delegation agreements totalling 22.3 million euros to support civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), farmers in rural areas, schools, life-long learning organisations, and local communities.
A four-year 17.7 million euro delegation agreement was signed on the new ‘Local Infrastructure Facility’ with the United Nations Development Programme, designed as a transparent mechanism for EU-funded infrastructure investments under the Aid Programme to the Turkish Cypriot community. The facility aims to provide support for the identification, screening, development, procurement, and physical implementation of relevant local infrastructure investments. The list includes projects ready for implementation starting early 2019 such as the Pedieos River/ Kanlıdere Rehabilitation Project, the extension of the Morphou and Famagusta wastewater treatment plants and the establishment of green waste composting facility in Nicosia.
