After driving for over 2.7 million kilometres since 1965, the tram will be repurposed for the benefit of the community
The Czech city of Ostrava has come up with an ingenious solution on how to give new live to its beloved means of transport – the tram. A 1965 tram, which has ran 2.7 million kilometres since its assembly found its use in the Lower Vítkovice area, announced the local authorities. It will serve as a background for events and will eventually turn into a café.
The 14-meter tram from 1965 was taken out of service by the Ostrava transport company last year. Although it has a total of 2,700,000 kilometres driven, the tram has never experienced a major accident. Up to 186 people and 23 seats fit into the vehicle produced by Tatra Smíchov, which was part of the ČKD Praha national enterprise back in the day. The transport company in today’s capital of the Moravian-Silesian Region originally purchased it for 368 thousand Czech Koruna (roughly 14295 euros) and put it into operation on November 1st 1965.
Petr Koudela, Director of the Vítkovice Lower Area explained that the tram would serve as an educational space, facility for various events and in the future as a café. The local authorities wanted to build an original presentation site together with the Ostrava Transport Company, which they regard as a successful mission.
