Paphos to have the first electric bus in Cyprus

Paphos to have the first electric bus in Cyprus

What's even better is that it will be free

A contract to supply the first electric bus in Cyprus was signed in Paphos at the end of 2019, according to the municipality. Local authorities believe that this is a key step towards transforming Paphos as a smart and digital city.

The agreement was signed by the mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, and the contractor MES ENERGY SA. It also includes the supply and installation of an electric vehicle charging station.

The total amount of the contract is 259,777 euros and it is funded by the ECORouTs Programme. The bus, along with the charging station, will be delivered and set up within four months.

The bus has 22-seats and entirely accessible to persons with disabilities. The electric vehicle will travel on two special 5km and 4km “green” routes, created to highlight the cultural and historical monuments of Paphos. What makes it even better is that it will be free to use.

The routes will pass through Paphos old town, as well as parts of the tourist coastal area of Kato Paphos. Furthermore, it will show the main historical monuments and points of tourist interest across the city.

The e-bus stops will be operated by a telematics system, which will inform visitors about the arrival of the bus, as well as historical information about the places through which it passes. A special online application will also be available.

Paphos - a smart and digital city

According to the statement of the mayor Phedonos, Paphos is the first city in Cyprus to acquire an environmentally friendly and zero-emission electric bus. He called other municipalities, organisations and companies to follow their good example.

The purchase of the eco vehicle is part of the municipality’s measures to transform Paphos into a “smart and digital city”. In addition, Paphos would install a solar power plant in the near future, in this way the entire electric bus project will be entirely environmentally friendly.
