The City Council of Paris has announced that it intends to modernize the French capital’s public toilet facilities, starting in 2024, with a new generation of restroom facilities. The latter, designed and assembled by JCDecaux, will be more comfortable, cleaner and greener.
The news flows neatly into the preparation plan for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games when the city is expected to receive millions of visitors, even more than usual for a place, which is already used to throngs of tourists.
It was reported that the number of these new facilities will be 435 throughout the capital's territory. Perhaps a little-known fact, but Paris already is the first city in the world in terms of available public toilets. Yet, one more reason to love and visit the City of Lights.
The new-generation toilets promise to be more ecological since water consumption will be reduced by almost two-thirds and electricity consumption by one-third compared to current equipment. They will be powered by 100% renewable electricity.
The teams in charge of cleaning the toilets will now travel by cargo bike to ensure that the toilets are operated non-polluting and without impact on traffic. As for repairs requiring the transport of spare parts, they will be carried out by agents equipped with electric vehicles.
In addition, the new facilities will be equipped with a large main cabin with universal access, an outdoor fountain equipped with soap and lined with a second urinal cabin. The waiting time between each use of the main cabin will be divided by three, limited to thirty seconds only, during which the sanitary elements will be cleaned and disinfected for the comfort of the next user. The urinal cabin will be accessible without any waiting time and disinfected between each use.
And this being Paris, design is also an important feature. JCDecaux has renewed its confidence in designer Patrick Jouin to create this new generation of toilets. Their silhouettes will be part of the continuity of the existing model in order to promote the identification of the service by users and guarantee its integration into the Parisian landscape.
