The conquest of villages, castles and fortresses is a mountain biking competition that takes you in the historical villages of Portugal’s Centro Region. This is an adventure that can be experienced solo or in teams of two or four. It is undertaken in a regime of total self-sufficiency meaning that participants are on their own, at their own risk and using their own resources. The route of the competition is part of the GR22 - the trail that connects 12 Historical Villages of Portugal - Sortelha, Castelo Mendo, Almeida, Castelo Rodrigo, Marialva, Trancoso, Linhares da Beira, Piódão, Castelo Novo, Idanha-a-Velha, Monsanto and Belmonte.
The Castles Quest can be contested as an eight-day event (between 15 and 23 September) covering a total distance of about 600 km, or as a two-day event (22 and 23 September), where the course is 329 km. The challenge remains the same: to travel a great many kilometres, in places of great historical importance, while following the overarching principle of total autonomy. The historic village of Linhares da Beira is the starting and finishing point for both events.
