Romania saves Romania or how the Red Cross helps the fight against coronavirus

The fundraising campaign is aimed at raising donations to help hospitals and other institutions involved in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic

The Red Cross in Romania has started a fundraising campaign named “Romania saves Romania”. The goal of the initiative is to raise donations to support hospitals and other institutions involved in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

Every citizen can donate 2 euros via text message at the special dedicated number 8827, without additional costs. Larger donations can also be made through the dedicated bank account, which could be found on the Romanian Red Cross website.

The Red Cross will use the collected financial support for:

  • Providing healthcare institutions in Romania with medical equipment and materials necessary for the treatment of COVID-19 infected patients;
  • Procuring protective materials for staff employed in the units that ensure permanence during the crisis subordinated to the Interior Ministry, Defense Ministry and Health Ministry;
  • Delivery of food and hygiene packages for vulnerable persons in isolation at home;
  • Aiding the quarantine centres in Romania in cooperation with the local authorities.

The Romanian Red Cross has announced that it has already a total of 2.6 million euros in donations from local companies and has purchased 375,000 protective gloves, 300 suits and 1,130 litres of disinfectants. All these much-needed resources in this extremely precarious situation have been distributed across the country with the help of its subsidiaries.

The Romanian NGO has also begun the procurement process for 10 COVID19 rapid test equipment, 300 kits for rapid test equipment that can be used to test 7,000 people, 5 mechanical ventilators and 1 million surgical masks.

By the time of writing this article, the organization has also been helping 5 quarantine centres in Romania with hygiene products, water, linens, cleaning products, beds, blankets, and other materials. It has also distributed more than 300 packages of 12 kg of basic foodstuffs to vulnerable persons in quarantine or social isolation.
