Romanian municipality will give money in exchange for old cars

The aim is to have younger car park and no abandoned vehicles on green spaces

Sfântu Gheorghe City Hall is launching a multi-annual program to rejuvenate the city's car park. According to the project, the Romanian municipality will offer 3000 lei (616 euros) in exchange for cars that have been registered in the city for more than 10 years.

The program is addressed to those individuals or legal entities that do not want to buy a new car but do want to sell their old one. They will not participate in the national scrap program.

To the attention of owners of more than 10-year-old cars

"We promised that we would initiate a program of public interest, which we called “We value your scrap” ("Dăm valoare rablei tale"). The aim of this program is, on the one hand, to try to reduce the number of cars parked in the city, and on the other hand to be active and help people in rejuvenating the car park. We would like to have a younger car park and fewer cars on green spaces," explained Mayor Antal Árpád.

The project will be launched this week with a public debate, and it stipulates that Sfântu Gheorghe City Hall will offer 3000 lei in exchange for those cars that have been registered in the municipality for at least 10 years with the same owner. Depending on the proposals from the inhabitants, it will be possible to make changes to the conditions of the initiative.

When the owner of the car that is handed over to the City Hall receives the amount of 3000 lei, he or she will commit to not purchasing another car for the next 3 years, or if he does, the purchased car will be maximum 5 years old. "I call on residents to come up with proposals under this program, so that they can be as close as possible to people's needs," added Mayor Árpád.

The program will be a multi-annual one, and the applications will be able to be submitted continuously. The budget allocated for next year is 1 million lei, an amount that may be increased depending on the number of requests. Currently, 21 782 cars are registered in Sfântu Gheorghe, of which more than half are older than 10 years, informed the Municipality.
