Italy has introduced rigorous measures in an attempt to tackle the coronavirus crisis. But what is life like in the Italian capital under lockdown?
Numerous measures have been adopted by the municipality of Rome in implementation of the Prime Minister's decrees to limit the spread of COVID-19. Here are some examples of the local government's approach, divided by sectors, as well as some of their extraordinary initiatives:
The last metro-bus-tram ride takes place at 9 pm, accompanied by a reduction of runs with the adoption of summertime. Night buses are also suspended.
Flexibility in and out for all service shifts throughout the municipal area, at railway stations and at Fiumicino airport, partially open, while Ciampino is closed. The minimum daily service time is reduced to 3 hours.
Until 3 April 2020 the payment of parking fees is suspended throughout the territory of Rome. The gates of the restricted traffic areas of the historic center, the Trident and Trastevere are deactivated for the whole day. The measure therefore also concern later evening hours.
Until 3 April, 100 municipal shared cars are made available to health workers without a private vehicle. The service will be free of charge, starting with employees who work in the intensive care units of the University Polyclinics Umberto I (Eastman, Covid Hospital 5), Tor Vergata (Covid Hospital 4) and Columbus-Gemelli (Covid Hospital 2) and Spallanzani Institutes ( Covid Hospital 1) and Casal Palocco (Covid Hospital 3).
Only services such as birth and death reports are provided at the public counters. The municipal registry offices open only in the morning and by appointment only.
Any other registry and marital status services are available exclusively online. Physical entry is ill-advised in order to maintain the safety distance of one meter between those who wait in line and between the public and operators.
At the telephone number 060606, the Rome Municipality contact center remains open as usual 24 hours a day.
