Rotterdam municipality to use only sustainable electricity starting 2020

A good part of the energy will be generated locally

As of next year, all municipal consumption of electricity in Rotterdam will be generated by sustainable sources. This is a feature of an agreement concluded by the Dutch municipality and two local companies, valid as of 1st January 2020.

It previews that all electricity that the municipality pays for, such as buildings, public lighting and sewage pumping stations, comes from solar and wind energy. Furthermore, a large part of it will be generated on Rotterdam’s territory.

Last week aldermen Bonte (in charge with Sustainability) and Van Gils (responsible for Finance, Organization, Port and Major Projects) signed the agreement with Eneco and Greenchoice for the supply of sustainable electricity for ten years to the second largest city in the Netherlands.

Energy transition in Rotterdam, involving citizens, institutions and the business

According to alderman Arno Bonte, the new energy contract will accelerate energy transition in Rotterdam. The Dutch city wants to become a leader in clean energy, he explained. With this contract, the local authority not only switches to 100% green energy, but also provides additional wind turbines and solar parks. That brings them a step closer to achieving independence from fossil fuels, the alderman continued. Alderman Arjan van Gils added that sustainable procurement is of paramount importance to the municipality.

The municipality also finds it particularly important to involve residents and companies in the Rotterdam energy transition. Both Eneco and Greenchoice have promised to make a contribution to local generation, the involvement of residents and the sustainability of business sites.

The companies expressed their satisfaction and optimism about the public-private partnership and were positive that in the coming years the energy transition will succeed thanks to their united efforts and the involvment of residents and businesses.

We will support them and, together with the municipality, realize even more local initiatives on sustainable energy, said Marieke van den Hoek (Commercial Director Greenchoice), quoted by the City of Rotterdam. “It makes us proud to work for and in Rotterdam. The starting point is that every Rotterdammer must be able to participate in the energy transition: green energy for and by Rotterdammers.

The contract will run from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2029.
