Last week the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) announced the winners of its prestigious competition, dedicated to the entrepreneurship at a local and regional level. The European Entrepreneurial Region Award distinguishes the European regions with the most credible and forward-looking vision. Thus, this year’s edition selected the city of Gdańsk, Poland in cooperation with the Pomorskie Region, Poland, the Business Region of Gothenburg, Sweden and the region of Navarra, Spain to hold the title in 2020.
The City of Gdańsk and the Pomorskie Region submitted a joint application which was based on their good strategy on fighting demographic changes, population ageing and the promotion of growth. They were awarded the distinction thanks to concrete actions addressing young talents, to whom business education was provided, start-ups and innovative SMEs.
As for Gothenburg, the region is known as one of the fastest growing when it comes to urban development and investment in infrastructure. Their strategy regarding SMEs focuses on six fields: skill supply, power of attraction, infrastructure and accessibility, land readiness, business climate and innovation power.
Finally, Navarra is working on a 2020-2020 entrepreneurship plan. Furthermore, their Smart Specialisation Strategy – Navarra S3 comprises of the following pre-conditions: reduction of regulatory burden, access to finance and markets and internationalization as key to a good entrepreneurship environment.
The award ceremony was attended by Karl-Heinz Lambertz, President of the European Committee of the Regions, who underlined the importance for regions and cities to develop good environment for business growth, so as to generate jobs. He described the winners as inspirational, thanks to their innovative thinking and efforts to create good conditions for businesses to flourish. This key role of regions and cities for sustainable growth has been acknowledged also by Vice-president of the Committee Markku Markkula.
Twenty-seven territories from fifteen Member-countries have been awarded over the years, including smaller, rural, less developed and peripheral areas. Find more about the competition and the award ceremony from the CoR webpage.
