The birds can be trained to pick up and dispose of cigarette butts
It turns out that most of Sweden’s street litter consists of discarded cigarette butts, and the town of Södertälje, for example, spends SEK 20 million (about 1.8 million euros) on cleaning efforts alone. Its municipal authority, however, is now carrying out a pilot project with the help of a start-up that uses trained crows to pick up cigarette butts and leave them in the nearest trash bin.
Christian Günther-Hanssen, the founder of the start-up called Corvid Cleaning claims that this would actually reduce the municipal cleaning expenses by 75%. As for the name of the company, it shouldn’t be confused with Covid, it is a reference to the scientific Latin name of the crows – Corvidae.
To forestall any possible criticism from animal rights activist, the company and the town have explained that the health of the birds will be taken into consideration as one of the indicators on how successful the project is. For the time being, the initiative is taking place as a beta test in one of the town’s districts.
If you’re wondering why crows would be the best-suited animals to perform this task. Günther-Hanssen explained for The Guardian that the birds have a natural proclivity to pick things up from the ground plus they are easier to teach. It has been estimated that crows actually have the learning ability of a young child, which marks them as quite intelligent.
“The estimation for the cost of picking up cigarette butts today is around 80 öre [Swedish cents] or more per cigarette butt, some say two Swedish crowns. If the crows pick up cigarette butts, this would maybe be 20 öre per cigarette butt. The saving for the municipality depends on how many cigarette butts the crows pick up,” explained Günther-Hanssen.
The crows are trained to pick up the butts and dispose of them in waste bins which also have food containers. After dropping off the butt the bird gets a treat.
