Il Castello di Sammezzano è un raro esempio di architettura eclettica e moresca in Europa. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, il castello divenne un hotel di lusso. Tuttavia, per oltre 25 anni è stato non occupato e trascurato con la sua proprietà rimanendo insicuro. Di conseguenza, le finestre rotte non sono state riparate e non sono stati riparati i tetti, che a loro volta hanno causato gravi danni dall'acqua e un notevole deterioramento del tessuto dell'edificio. La mancanza di sicurezza ha reso il posto privo di furti e atti vandalici.
