The city of Santander with a smart strategy to tackle waste

Santander is one of 11 pilot cities that have come together to act as urban laboratories as part of the URBAN WASTE project

Santander reinvents itself to enhance the quality of life of its citizens and visitors with facilities and smart waste management practices. The sensor technology that has been used in the city, aims to improve the urban waste management spread over the city, showing in real time the locations and the status of rubbish bins and containers and also the measurement of rubbish fill level.

Santander is one of 11 pilot cities that have come together to act as urban laboratories as part of the URBAN WASTE project. The idea of the project is to help develop strategies aimed at reducing the amount of municipal waste production as well as strategies to further develop re-use, recycling, collection and disposal of waste.

The city has become an urban laboratory with thousands of sensors deployed all around the urban space, facilitating research in the scientific community to create and open up new possibilities and services geared towards the public, the authorities and business. Educating its citizens is an important part of the long-term city council’s strategy. The city even turned its beaches into open-air environmental classrooms this August and September, hosting recycling workshops with children.
