The new London Bus Safety Standard should be endorsed until 2024

The aim of the initiative is to reach zero deaths on or by bus in London by 2030

Safety is at the heart of Transport for London’s bus operations. Around 6.5 million passengers are transported every day on London buses and there are fewer than 3 injures for every million passengers. This makes the London bus network one of the safeties in the world.

Transport for London has adopted Vision Zero for London, with a target of zero deaths or serious injuries on the road by 2041. For buses London has an even more ambitious target of no one killed in, or by, a London bus by 2030.

The Bus Safety Standard is a range of measures that are working within the industry of all operators in London. The features include:

  • Advanced Emergency Braking
  • Intelligent Speed Assistance
  • Improved Direct and Indirect Vision
  • Pedal Application Error
  • Runaway Bus Prevention
  • Acoustic and Visual Conspicuity
  • Vulnerable Road User Frontal Crashworthiness
  • Occupant-Friendly Interiors
  • Slip Protection
