This Spanish region offers digital nomads up to 15,000 euros

Remote workers will have to settle in Extremadura for a minimum of 2+1 years in order to get the full amount

Extremadura may not be the most popular of Spanish destinations likely due to its landlocked geographical location. However, it’s about to get a whole lot more attractive given that its government is offering remote workers subsidies of up to 15,000 euros if they choose to make it their temporary home.

The government of Extremadura, located between the Portuguese border, Andalucia and Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) wants to try and turn the tide of depopulation from this largely rural but beautiful region.

For this purpose, the authorities have set a budget of 2 million euros aside, which will be used as grants to attract remote workers, including digital nomads, to settle for a minimum of two years and experience the southern Spanish lifestyle. The hope is that they will fall in love with it sufficiently that they may end up staying even longer.

The aid package means that the regional ministry of economy will be able to subsidize the move of some 200 remote working professionals who derive their income by working on a computer. Both the candidates and their jobs must be based outside of Extremadura before applying for the grant.

Here are the other conditions to meet

The Extremaduran Ministry of the Economy explained that the authorities will consider two types of applicants in determining their viability for the grants.

Women and young people under 30 will be eligible to get 10,000 euros if they stay for a minimum of two years. Afterwards, if they extend their stay for one more year they can get 5,000 euros more.

Men and those over 30 will be able to get 8,000 euros for a two-year stay and another 4,000 euros if they stay another year after that.

The grants will be handed out on a first-come-first-served basis until the fund is exhausted.

Applicants must have the legal ability to reside in Spain, either by having EU nationality or EU residency or by having successfully applied for Spain’s digital nomad visa.
