Toyota Mobility Foundation invites cities to take up its challenge

Local governments have until 18 September to apply

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) is seeking mid to large-size cities across the globe that could be potential entrants into TMF's Sustainable Cities Challenge – which is live and open for entries until 18 September.

This $9 million challenge is a partnership of TMF, Challenge Works, and the World Resources Institute. Through two stages, the Sustainable Cities Challenge will award $9 million to improve access to safe, equitable, and sustainable mobility solutions for all.

Two-step selection process

Cities around the world can fill out a short initial entry form by 18 September 2023, after which ten cities will be shortlisted, and receive a range of capacity-building support in how to design and run an open innovation challenge.

At the next stage, three cities will be selected as partners to host a $3 million challenge in 2024, with direct support and engagement from the Sustainable Cities Challenge team.  Below are a few examples of how cities could benefit from taking part in this initiative:

  • Chance to unlock up to $3 million in innovation funding to address local mobility issues, whilst also accessing innovation and mobility-related capacity-building support.
  • This includes a $100,000 stipend to support the city's participation in the Challenge and to build staff capacity (where possible and in line with local laws and regulations).
  • Invitation for two representatives to the Sustainable Cities Challenge Academy in Dallas, Texas, USA, in November 2023, where a range of experts will provide support and training in challenge design, innovation, and urban mobility. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the Challenge.
  • Follow-up bespoke challenge design and problem definition sessions for local teams.
  • Communications and publicity support to raise awareness of your involvement in the Challenge.
  • Access to peer sharing with a cohort of nine other innovative city teams.

If participation is of interest, please head over to the website where you can sign up for a 1:1 session with someone from our team. At that link, there are also recordings of recent webinars we've had where we talk in more detail about the Sustainable Cities Challenge.
