Some 50 new trees will be planted at the borough pending a higher turnout at the second round of the Polish presidential elections on Sunday 12 July – this is what the Mayor of Wroclaw Jacek Sutryk promises to his fellow citizens. The second round pits the incumbent President Andrzej Duda (Law and Justice) against the current mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski (Civic Platform). The electoral challenge with a prize of 50 trees opposes the inhabitants of Krzyki and those of Psie Pole.
At the second round of what could well become historical Presidential elections, two men will face each other – the conservative President of the country Andrzej Duda who got 43.50 % of the total votes and the liberal Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski who received 30.46% in the first round on 28 June.
The results at the local level were quite different, though – in large cities, Trzaskowski is markedly more popular. In Wroclaw, he received 43.56 % while Duda came second with just 28.04 %. This happens in the context of extremely high voter turnout in the Silesian capital – 70.81% of those entitled to vote (with 64.51% at the national level, Polish Electoral Commission).
Now, the mayor of the city wants to achieve even higher turnout which guarantees greater authority of the elected candidates. Therefore, he stimulates the inhabitants of Krzyki or Psie Pole with a special gift, namely – more greenery planted in the housing estate with the higher turnout.
The city will thus plant 50 additional trees there and take care of them afterwards. The municipality has set the amount of 100,000 polish zlotych (22,000 euro) aside for the purpose.
Sutryk underlined that the number of residents of the city having the right to vote – nearly half a million – is significant and that this year’s turnout is much higher than at the last elections - 55.21 %. “I want to thank you very much for your attitude and really high turnout in the elections. This is very important because we show how wonderful citizens we are. This shows what Wrocław is like - loving democracy and caring for its development”, Jacek Sutryk was quoted saying by the municipal portal.
