A project turns ceramic tiles of low value into permeable surface thereby building a sustainable drainage system
A project in Benicàssim, Valencia is implementing an innovative solution to flooding, which arguably causes 800 million euro damage per year, according to Spain’s Insurance Compensation Consortium. The main aim of LIFE CERSUDS project is to enhance city adaptability to climate change and to foster the use of SuDS and green infrastructure by designing and implementing a sustainable urban drainage system (SuDS) demonstrator. The latter will consist of a permeable surface with low environmental impact, based on the use of ceramic tiles of low commercial value.
Among the objectives of the project are to reduce flooding due to torrential rains by increasing permeable surfaces in cities; to reuse the water stored during rainy periods in periods of drought; to protect water quality and reduce the pollution effects.
Moreover, it is expected that project activities will lead to decreased CO2 emissions from the manufacture of flooring materials, since the material used for the surface is in-stock ceramic tiles of low commercial value and as a consequence – reducing company stocks will increase industry profits.
The project is financed by the LIFE Programme 2014-2020 with 986 947 euro EU funding and is being implemented between 2016-2019 by the Institute for Ceramic Technology ITC-AICE as lead partner, together with 6 other partners.
