Urban Innovative Actions help local authorities test new solutions to urban challenges

Discover the five topics under which proposals will be funded

Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) is an Initiative of the European Union that provides urban areas of Europe with resources to test new and unproven solutions to address urban challenges. It has a total budget of EUR 372 million for 2014-2020 from the European Regional Development Fund. It comes as a response to the difficulty to test and implement solutions, due to reluctance of urban authorities to invest money in new and unproven risky solutions.

The actions are dedicated to urban authorities of more than 50,000 inhabitants, or a grouping of urban authorities with a total population of a least 50,000 inhabitants, located in one of the member states. Projects must be implemented with the involvement of all key stakeholders able to bring expertise and knowledge on the specific policy issue, hence partners from agencies, private sector, research institutions, NGOs are highly desired.

This year’s call for proposals will be launched in September under the following five topics:

  • Air quality
  • Circular economy
  • Culture and cultural heritage
  • Demographic change

Support for the awarded project comes in the form of funding (up to 80% of the total cost), knowledge-sharing and visibility. More information about the forthcoming fifth call for proposals will be announced in April. Do not wait for the invitation to be announced, start planning your proposals and partnerships as soon as possible, to guarantee increased chances of success.
