Vantaa Innovation Competition: Applications open on 14 April

The Finnish city will allocate EUR 300,000 for the realisation of the best ideas

From 14 April until 15 August, the citizens of Vantaa will have the opportunity to submit proposals for the Vantaa Innovation Competition. As part of this competition, the Finnish city has set aside a total of EUR 300,000, which it will allocate to the applicants with the best ideas.

Who can apply?

In a press release, the City of Vantaa explains that all residents, companies, educational institutions, associations, organisations, and city employees are welcome to submit proposals. Expanding on this, Mayor Ritva Viljanen shared:

“The name of the competition “City invention of all sizes” means that we are looking for ideas, both big and small, to build a better Vantaa. We hope that a wide range of actors will take part in the competition.”

Taking this further, applicants can submit proposals that fall under one or more of three categories, namely ‘good everyday services’, ‘thriving urban centres’, and ‘combating climate change’. Ideas under these categories must work to promote social innovation and prevent inequality or exclusion. What is more, they should raise the community spirit and increase the well-being of residents.

European Rising Innovative City

In November 2021, the European Innovation Council selected Vantaa as the European Rising Innovative City at the iCapital awards in Brussels. In addition to winning the prestigious title, the Finnish city also received a monetary prize worth EUR 500,000. Now, it is using part of this money to finance the Vantaa Innovation Competition, which will allow successful applicants to each receive funding of up to EUR 100,000.

A panel of experts will evaluate all submissions before choosing and announcing the applicants with the best ideas in October 2022. The winners of the competition will then have to implement their ideas by the end of 2023.
