Venezia ha approvato la introduzione di una tassa fino a €10 per soggiorni di breve durata ai turisti. Il bilancio italiano per il 2019 ha una clausola che consente a Venezia di imporre la tassa, prendendo di mira i turisti che arrivano sulle navi da crociera. Loro pagano già una simile "tassa di sbarco" quando visitano l'isola italiana. Centinaia di navi da crociera attraccano a Venezia ogni anno, consentendo a oltre un milione di passeggeri di vedere le attrazioni della città.
I veneziani si lamentano da tempo che il turismo di massa sta sommergendo la città, adorata per i suoi pittoreschi canali. Il sindaco di Venezia, Luigi Brugnaro, ha affermato che la "tassa di sbarco" genererebbe entrate molto necessarie per mantenere pulita la città. La nuova tassa dovrebbe essere tra €2,50 e €5 a persona, ma in estate potrebbe salire fino a €10. Venezia prevede di avere la tassa in vigore per l'alta stagione 2019. La nuova tassa porterà circa 50 milioni di euro all'anno al comune.
