Vienna extends bike paths significantly

Vienna extends bike paths significantly

Donaustadt is to become a model district for cycling

The network of bike paths in Vienna is being considerably extended, as local authorities informed. At the same time, the residential area of Donaustadt is promoted as a model district.

The latter will determine the possibility of streets having bike lanes and cycling connections. The municipality is working on 21 projects in total and it will close the gap in the largest network of bike paths.

This year, the road network will be expanded by eight kilometres. The most convenient bike connections are currently being examined on all Donaustadt streets. With the results now available, it should be possible to get from A to B by bike on safe and comfortable bike paths that branch throughout the Austrian capital.

In the Danube city, there is not only a single cycle path - a real cycling offensive is getting started. The attractive bike path on Wagramer Straße will be built in 2 stages. The first part, which will run from the Kagran Bridge to the Danube Center, will open in 2022. The second phase begins the following year and links the Danube Center to Kagraner Platz.

More quality for cyclists, cross-district bicycle connections, new bicycle-friendly roads

"Cycling is booming in our city and the increasing number of cyclists is encouraging. In the previous year, according to the modal split survey by Wiener Linien, the proportion of cycling increased from seven to nine percent. Corona certainly has a decisive influence, but the trend towards more cycling is becoming apparent even before Corona and that is good for our climate model city," said Mobility Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ).

The focus is also on cross-district connections. For example, it will be possible in the future to cycle along with the suburbs from the 18th to the 14th district, because this year two-way cycle paths and a bicycle-friendly road are being built between the 16th and 17th districts.

“I am in close contact with the districts, we have adapted and improved the existing plans in a number of cases. I want common solutions and consensus,” added Councilor Sima.
