The Province of Trento dominated by the imposing profile of the Dolomites

Which Italian province offers the best quality of life now?

Which Italian province offers the best quality of life now?

According to a recent annual ranking, done by LaSapienza University of Rome, there is still a stark north-south divide in that aspect

The Province of Trento, located in the northeast of Italy, leads the way in terms of quality of life within all of Italy. This was revealed in the latest ranking compiled by La Sapienza University of Rome and ItaliaOggi magazine. This is the 24th edition of the study that compares the quality of life across Italy.

In fact, the north, and more specifically the northeast, of the country has taken the top spots in the ranking, thus confirming an already visible and long-standing divide in development between the North and the South of Italy. The bottom spots are predominated by provinces in Sicily, Calabria, Campania and Apulia.

Italy’s development challenges have a clear geographical setting

The index (which looks at the country’s 107 provinces) measures a province's quality of life by taking account of indicators reflecting public services, health and the environment, demographics, leisure time, law and order, the standard of living and business and employment.

This year, the province of Trento knocked Parma out of the pole position, showing that it has handled post-pandemic recovery in the best possible way. Interestingly enough, the second spot went to the neighbouring province of Bolzano, also in the Italian Alps.

The centre of Italy does very well, too, with the provinces of Bologna and Florence, showing slight improvement in their positions from last year.

Here are the top 10 provinces as decided by the 2022 ranking:

  1. Trento
  2. Bolzano
  3. Bologna
  4. Florence
  5. Milan
  6. Siena
  7. Parma
  8. Pordenone
  9. Trieste
  10. Modena

As for the Italian capital, Rome, it climbed one place from 54 to 53 in the annual quality of life rankings, thus confirming a mediocre kind of performance when it comes to life quality provision for its residents.
