Badalona authorities set aside 2.5 million euros to help people over 60

The money is aimed at those most affected by the impact of Covid-19 crisis

Earlier this week, the Mayor of Badalona Xavier Garcia Albiol presented a subsidy program with a budget of 2.5 million euros which is destined for the people over the age of 60 living in the municipality in households where the income level is under 900 euros a month. The measure is designed to alleviate worries and difficulties of senior residents who may find it harder to pay the increased utility bills, such as water, heating and electricity with the coming of the colder months.

The measure is planned in collaboration with Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB)

Now that coronavirus cases are back on the rise and administrations all over the continent are scrambling to prepare for a possible second wave with the colder weather that is about to come, Badalona City Council wants to show that it is thinking pro-actively. Authorities in the city, located to the north-east of Barcelona, want to assuage the fears of people over the age of 60 who receive low incomes about their abilities to pay their domestic bills.

Starting 1 October 2020 and all the way until 31 March 2021, people who follow under this category can apply for financial aid at the District Municipal Offices located in Can Cabanyes, La Salut, Sant Roc and the El Viver municipal building.

“Now more than ever the support of the City Council is needed to be able to move forward and for this reason, this first grant program is launched to help people over 60,” said the Mayor of Badalona, adding that "We must not forget that many of them have had to deal with this crisis alone at home and often helping their families with minimum pensions".

There are more than 50 000 people over the age of 60 living in the municipality of Badalona, however, the aid will reach only those who qualify under the set parameters. Mayor Albiol was explicit that residents occupying housing illegally will not qualify for the subsidy.
