Genoa named European capital of sport for 2024

The title will bring millions of European funds to the Italian city

Genoa has been designated as "European Capital of Sport 2024". This was decided by ACES Europe, European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation. The choice will bring tens of millions of European funds to Genoa to restructure facilities and resources boosting the sports tourism economy.

The Ligurian capital has received equal points with Glasgow, so the selection committee decided to award the title to the Scottish city for 2023 and to Genoa for 2024.

The selection of the European sport capital is done four years in advance. This year the title holds the Hungarian capital Budapest. The cities that will host dozens of international events in the next three years are: Malaga in 2020, the Dutch city of The Hague in 2021 and Lisbon in 2022.

An organizational challenge

Following the privilege to host the 2022 edition of The Ocean Race, the greatest round-the-world sailing event, another big challenge is now coming for Genoa. The European Capital of Sport 2024 title presents both an organizational challenge and opportunity to promote the Italian city throughout Europe. It will be another testimony of how the municipal administration is capable of organizing large sporting events.

Genoa boasts a long tradition in sports. The city plans to promote activities in the European Capital of Sport 2024 program not just as sport for champions but also as sport for all ages: children, families, seniors.
