Paris launches free public transport for children

First among several measures aiming to tackle traffic problems in the French capital

During an interview for the French edition Libération on the 9th of January, the Mayor of Paris Madame Anne Hidalgo announced that the public transport in the capital city will become free for children. The new measure concerns all kids between the ages of 4 and 11 and is to start on the 1st of September 2019. Currently, only the youngest benefit from free transportation in the public network – those which are under 4 years of age.

On top of this, Hidalgo promises free urban transport for people with disabilities below 20, as well as a reimbursement of 50% of the monthly cards to college and high school students. Another measure oriented towards increased and facilitated mobility of young people is the free Velib for adolescents between 14 and 18. These undertakings are estimated at 15 million euro for full a calendar year, starting from 2020, reassure from the local administration.

For the time being, a complete abolishment of public transportation fee is considered inefficient, hence it is not previewed by the Municipality.
