Lors d'une interview pour l'édition française de Libération le 9 janvier, la maire de Paris, Mme Anne Hidalgo, a annoncé que les transports en commun de la capitale deviendraient gratuits pour les enfants. La nouvelle mesure concerne tous les enfants âgés de 4 à 11 ans et doit débuter le 1er septembre 2019. À l'heure actuelle, seuls les plus jeunes bénéficient de la gratuité des transports sur le réseau public - ceux qui ont moins de 4 ans.
En outre, Hidalgo promet de rendre gratuits les transports urbains pour les personnes handicapées de moins de 20 ans et de rembourser 50% des cartes mensuelles aux étudiants des collèges et des lycées. Une autre mesure orientée vers la mobilité accrue et facilitée des jeunes est le Velib gratuit pour les adolescents de 14 à 18 ans. Ces engagements sont estimés à 15 millions d'euros pour une année complète, à compter de 2020, estime l'administration locale.
Pour le moment, une suppression complète des frais de transport en commun est considérée comme inefficace et, par conséquent, elle n’est pas anticipée par la municipalité.
